Update (August 27, 2026): After posting a set of cryptic teasers yesterday, American has announced its new routes for Summer 2027:

As widely predicted, the announcement included A32XLR (and neo) routes from Philadelphia to Vienna, Reykjavik, and Porto. A new route from New York City to Nice, joining Delta on the route, along with a flight to Amsterdam.

There’s Charlotte to Barcelona and the previously announced addition of Tokyo Narita from Chicago, replacing JAL. Then some season extensions (Charlotte to Paris Charles De Gaulle and Miami to Milan Malpensa). All in all, a pretty boring announcement, although having an option other than Delta nonstop from New York to Nice will be nice.

It’s become a bit of a tradition for American carriers to post cryptic teasers before announcing their network changes. In that vein, American Airlines posted a teaser of its new destinations and routes in summer 2027 today.

Earlier today, American Airlines dropped the following post on X and other networks with four pictures of a menu hinting at its new destinations and routes in summer 2027.

As a lifelong lover of puzzles, it’s been stuck in my head today, and I’ve already spent too much time trying to decode the puzzle. My guesses are below.

Single-patty Hamburger

I think the single-patty and 321 here are both hinting at the single-aisle A321XLR as the aircraft being used for this route. 1,776 and 215 are both clear references to Philadelphia (America was founded in the city in 1776 and 215 is the local area code). I think both the HAM (Hamburg) in Hamburger and UIO for Quito are misdirections (a Philadelphia-to-Quito flight seems… out of place). This may be my European education coming through, but my second thought when I saw UIO was the University of Oslo (Universitetet i Oslo)’s abbreviation and the pickled herring points Nordic.

The other option? This is a red herring, intended only to introduce Philadelphia as the hub all of the routes on this page will fly from.

Caesar Salad: Vienna (VIE)

I admit, I got a little help from Google figuring this one out, but YLHQQD w/ Caesar shift of -3 spells Vienna. The price, $23, references the 23 districts in Vienna.

Smoked Fish Soup: Reykjavik (KEF)

If you swap the $21.64 price, that’s almost the exact coordinates for Reykjavik (64°N, 21°W), and the fish theme works well for a return to Iceland.

Pristine Octopus Ravioli with Truffle Oreganata: Porto (OPO)

The initials spell out Porto. It was also hinted at by aviation insider @xJonNYC last year.

ORD-NRT: “magnificent” “extra mile” = magnificent mile. Miso/umami = Japan. Already announced.

CLT-BCN: Citrus Lime Thyme = CLT. Sacred Family = Sagrada Familia, $18.82 = 1882 is when they started building it.

Corkage fee and specials with wine flight

I think this is a misdirect, not a flight to Cork (ORK), although this would certainly be in range for the A321XLR. I’ve also been struggling with the $104.27 price for all four selections (it’s more than “buying” all four separately). My read is that it’s probably the end of the season for these routes on October 4, 2027.

New York Strip and Fish and Chips

I’m hitting a complete blank on these two except that they are almost certainly additions from JFK. Fish and chips suggests something to do with London, perhaps an increase in frequencies.

Herb Crusted Salmon, Ink Linguini with Shrimp, Eggplant Provencal, and Lobster Bisque: Nice (NCE)

The South of France has never been hotter and it seems American is adding a flight to Nice. Treating this as a letter-based index in the dish title, it spells out N (the 17th letter in Herb Crusted Salmon), I (the 19th letter in Ink Linguini with Shrimp), C (the 15th letter in Eggplant Provencal), and E (the 13th letter in Lobster Bisque). The dishes all wouldn’t be out of place at La Plage du Hôtel Martinez. The language is also very Côte d’Azur focused: “azure waters”, “English blue”, “bay”.

Where will they fly from? If American adds a flight from New York, it’ll be competing with Delta from JFK, while there would be no competition (but far less local demand) from PHL.

Magnificent Miso Bites: Chicago to Tokyo (NRT)

This route has already been announced. What cuisine do miso and delicate umami flavors evoke? Clearly, Japanese food. “Magnificent” and “extra mile” clearly reference Chicago’s Magnificent Mile.

Queen’s Escargot

Charlotte is known as the Queen City, so this is probably a flight from American’s hub there. Escargot is probably most associated with France. So perhaps a CLT-CDG route?

Citrus Lime Thyme Prawns

The initials of Citrus Lime Thyme spell out CLT (Charlotte). A sacred family recipe? Barcelona’s most famous attraction is the Sagrada Familia, which has been under construction since 1882 (the price of the dish? $18.82).

Guava Gelato

Mango-Infused Almonds? Those initials spell out MIA (Miami). Gelato suggests Italy. Fashion says Milan. American recently re-added Miami to Milan as a daily flight. They wouldn’t announce a reduction, but more frequency doesn’t make sense. Maybe an aircraft change?

Bottom Line

American is announcing its new routes for summer 2027 tomorrow (August 27, 2026). I’ve made some guesses, but it’s all pretty unclear… We’ll find out tomorrow.
